The Sharp Corporation
manufactures a good, intermediate line of vacuums. They make one of the best -
if not the best (it has consistently been rated #1 of its type) -
compact canister vacuums in the industry.
They also make an extremely powerful line of uprights, using their Twin-EnergyTM
motors - motors well known within the vacuum industry for the high waterlift
(suction) they produce. Sharp uprights use a bypass system whereby the
dirt travels into the dirt compartment thru the hose - bypassing the motor and
thus preventing the fan/motor damage associated with traditional uprights when
foreign objects impact the fan.
Many Sharp upright models offer rug/floor switches which enable the
revolving brush to be shut off so that bare floors can more effectively cleaned
(it is usually preferable to shut off the revolving action of a spinning brush
to prevent dirt particles from being scattered across the floor). Most Sharp
upright vacuums also feature tools-on-board (TOB) which enables the user
to immediately dust table tops, edge clean along a baseboard with a wand and
crevice tool, etc.
Many Sharp uprights use micron or Hepa-type filtration. The Sharp bags - both
upright and canister - are micron bags to provide enhanced filtration of smaller
particles. However, as has been mentioned elsewhere on this website, unless a
vacuum has sealed (airtight) housings throughout, the tiny,
lung-damaging-particles (LDPs) are being forced out by the millions through the
apertures in the vacuum housings. Thus, while the filter(s) do their job
- the pollutants are spewing out everywhere else. To learn about upright
vacuums with totally sealed housings,

The Sharp Compact Canister vacuum model EC-7311 has been the industry standard
for compact vacuums for many years. These sturdy little canisters offer
excellent cleaning power, micron filtration, an automatic cord rewind for quick
use out of and back into the closet, and a full set of accessories - most of
which store ingeniously in a flush compartment in the rear of the vacuum. It
features a carrying handle and a crushproof hose. Very popular - a winner for
vacation homes, apartments, a 2nd vacuum, etc.
