Information on Portable Air Conditioners

Portable Air Conditioners provide several substantial benefits in cooling that are not available with other types of air conditions.

The 1st advantage is that they are portable (duh). Because of this, they can readily be moved from location to location as needed. This can be an advantage if Aunt Louise comes to stay for a few weeks and her guest room needs to be cooled – subsequently, the Air Conditioner can be moved back into the Living Room for supplemental cooling.

Another, lateral advantage is that of flexibility. By this we mean that, if a bedroom has a window into which a regular, window air conditioner is installed – that bedroom window is now out of use for the season. If the weather cools down and you wish to open that window to help provide a cross breeze – you be out of luck.

However, if you are using a Portable Air Conditioner, the Portable Air Conditioner can be exhausted out the bedroom window as normal (installing the exhaust bracket into a regular double-hung window typically takes a few minutes). Then, if the weather cools down, the window can be opened and the window bracket can be removed and – voila! – in the course of a minute you can have the use of that window to let in a cooling breeze. Aaaahhh …..

A Portable Air Conditioner also enables cooling of areas that normally can’t be air conditioned. In my house we have a finished basement and there is no way – none – to use a regular window or thru-the-wall air conditioner. However, by installing the duct hose outside with a dryer vent, we are able to use two Portable Air Conditioners that also provide the benefits of dehumidifiers. This latter benefit is due to the fact that moisture is being removed from the air. Of course, a dehumidifier returns hot air to a (basement) environment – the Portable Air Conditioner provides the added benefit of cooling that environment!

One substantial, historical disadvantage to a Portable Room Air Conditioner is that the unit typically collects the water removed from the air into an internal reservoir. This reservoir needs to be constantly emptied – routinely as much as every several hours. This can be a huge annoyance – especially if the unit is used in a night-time bedroom setting and beeps the unfortunate sleeper awake every few hours.

However, at least one industry-leading Portable Air Conditioner – the Plasma Cool – features a patented Nano-Mist technology whereby the water is atomized and removed along with the warm air thru the duct hose. Thus, this unit simply does not require the routine emptying of the reservoir!

Most units provide only 10,000 BTU or less of cooling power. The Plasma Cool is the only 110V unit featuring 12,000 BTU of awesome cooling power, and the venting system enables the cool air to be elevated so that there is no concentrated stream of cold air blowing directly onto room occupants.
