The Royal Appliance Company
of Ohio has been making all-metal vacuum cleaners since 1905. They continue to
do so today and thus provide an almost unique line of vacuums for commercial
(or, residential) use.
Upright Vacuums: One of
the hallmark features of Royal all-metal vacuums is the durability. Royal
Upright vacuums use cast aluminum main housings. These housings are close to
unbreakable - even under heavy usage - and provide the benefit of light weight.
The handle is metal (again, durable) and the switch is a traditional, metal
toggle switch (absolutely trouble free). The outer, zippered bag assembly is
constructed of a tough, abrasion resistant material and will accept either a
large, standard paper bag or a micron paper bag for those who want very clean
exhaust air. A hepa paper bag is also available.
The revolving brush used on the Royal metal commercial upright vacuum has ball
bearings. This is in distinction to the sleeve bearings used on many revolving
brushes. Ball bearings are simply more durable and enable a more "true" balance
for the brush as it spins. This reduces vibration and heat. The result of this
is that there is less to go wrong with the brush and the housing into which the
brush sits.
In connection with this latter feature, a Royal ball-bearing revolving brush
assembly is fitted with nylon end caps over the bearings. The entire brush
assembly sits inside of a cast aluminum housing. It is impossible for the nylon
caps to wear out the aluminum housing. On most other vacuums, the brush sits in
a plastic housing and this housing is subject to deforming or wearing due to
problems with the brush.
A Royal brush also has a metal race on each end of the brush before the bearing.
This race is designed - and, works nicely - to prevent material (hair, thread,
etc.) from entering the bearing area. If the bearing is kept clean, it operates
without problems.
As well, the brushes are designed on most of the Royal metal upright vacuums
with stiffeners behind the brush bristles. This serves to kinetically "snap"
the bristle through the carpet fibers. This greatly enhances the brushing
action and also considerably aids in the "pushability" of the vacuum. On a
standard commercial pile carpet a Royal metal upright vacuum will literally
"walk" itself across the carpet without any operator assistance. This makes
the vacuum effortless to use.
Royal metal uprights also use a large, highly-curved metal fan. It is close to
impossible to either jam the fan (it tends to "munch" debris) or to break it.
If it does become jammed, Royal features a "speed-apart" design whereby the fan
housing simply pulls apart after removing four screws. The offending material
can be removed and the fan housing screwed back together. The whole process
takes a few minutes only.
Royal also uses a 50-foot, grounded commercial cord. This ensures that the
operator is not constantly looking for another electrical outlet - a lot of
cleaning can be done in a 50-foot radius! The Royal upright vacuum is available
in two widths - 12-inch and 18-inch. The 12-inch unit is by far the most
popular; however, the 18-inch machine is valuable for large, open areas.
Tank Vacuums: The Royal
tank vacuum is also all-metal. It uses a powerful, Lamb Ametek twin-fan motor.
It uses a cloth bag into which is installed a paper bag and, like the upright
vacuums, the paper bags are available in standard paper, micron paper or hepa
paper bags. A micron filter after the bag will further assist in providing the
cleanest possible exhaust air.
Royal features a crush-proof hose with metal connectors on both ends. It uses a
set of metal extension wands and all the accessories except for the crevice tool
feature metal elbows for durability. We rarely replace Royal accessories - they
are pretty durable.
The Royal all-metal tank vacuum offers a balanced, durable vacuum with good
cleaning power and a full set of accessories that ride on-board the main vacuum.
It uses a heavy-duty set of swiveling ball castors on the front and
chip-and-impact-resistant wheels on the back (the same type of wheels as are
used on the upright vacuums).
Royal all-metal vacuums are easy to use, durable, highly efficient and extremely
cost efficient. If you are a New Jersey State entity or subdivision, you might

for Royal vacuums (we usually do).
